What's On My Shelf: Contemporary Edition

12:30 PM

This year, I want to see how many physical books I own, so I decided to create this series where I listed all the physical books I own, and the story about it. It doesn't include my parents and sister books. All the books in this list is bought using my (more like my parents) money, unless otherwise stated. I realize how lucky I am to be able to own books at all, and I have no intention of bragging. I hope you'll enjoy! :)

Contemporary is a genre I don't really read under normal circumstances. I mean, when I'm in the mood I could read 3 books straight of contemporary, but most of the time I don't read it. I also noticed how little I have them in my bookshelves. So let's see how many contemporary books I actually have.

  1. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green {ENG}
  2. 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher {ENG}
  3. Let It Snow by John Green and co. {ENG, gifted}
  4. My True Love Gave to Me by Stephanie Perkins and co. {ENG, gifted}
  5. Perfect Chemistry by Simon Elkeles {IND}
  6. Chain Reaction by Simon Elkeles {IND}
  7. Wonder by R.J Palacio {IND}
  8. Seed by Lisa Heathfield {ENG}
  9. To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han {ENG}
  10. P.S I Still love You by Jenny Han {ENG}
  11. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell {ENG}
  12. I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson {ENG}
  13. Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot {IND}
  14. Princess in the Spotlight by Meg Cabot {IND}
14 books! That's not so bad. I thought I only have 5 or something.

So Princess Diaries was my first contemporary ever. It's also the oldest book I own on my bookshelf. Technically, it's not mine. It's my mother's. But since I liked it so much, I claimed it as mine. TFIOS is one of the few books I own in hardcover on my shelf. I know I said I dislike John's writing (no hate), but it was really hyped up and I'm curious so I bought the only available version. Let It Snow was gifted along with My True Love Gave to Me by my boyfriend. 13 Reasons Why is one of my very first book I read in English. I still remember the anxious feeling when I bought it, because what if it ended up unread and I wasted money for like, 3 books?? (Imported books are really expensive here guys) But I really enjoyed it in the end, and even recommended it to my sister! Wonder is a book that really touched my heart, and Perfect Chemistry series is one of the reason I started reading contemporary again. I'll Give You The Sun is one of the 2 books I bought during my homestay in Australia. I haven't read Seed yet, so no comment on that one. And finally, the Lara Jean duology is a series that give me all the fuzzies! (We'll see if I would buy the 3rd book or not).

Okay guys, that's all the contemporary books I own on my bookshelf. It really is a genre I hardly reach for, because sometimes they just fell flat for me and it makes me don't want to take any risk with that genre. I hope you guys enjoy this post, and the next one would be the paranormal books I own!

  1. I don't read a lot of contemporaries either. I'm picky with my contemporary reads. I'm honestly not super interested with John Green's books but all the hype around his books really makes me want to try them. I'll possibly borrow them from the library. I also have a couple of books on my shelf that my mom used to own. She doesn't read anymore so I just kept them :)

    1. Oh yes me too. Contemporary is a genre that solely relies on the characters (fantasy has world building to back them up, so I'm really picky too about what I read.

  2. Same here! Contemporary is not one of the genres that I would read given the choice of all genres in existence. But, I do enjoy some contemporary books! Same here, TFIOS is the only of John Green's books I actually enjoyed. Others? Not so much. Cool post! :)

  3. I don't always reach for contemporary books either, tbh, but I know I own a TON of them just from getting sent them for review hehe. And it's good! I've gotten lot so favourites that way (including I'll Give you the Sun and TFIOS for sure!!) And I really really want to read the Lara Jean books. Eeep. I have the first on one reserve at the library but it's taking forever. *collapses in a heap of impatience*

    1. I don't really either but for some reason most of the books in my kindle is contemporary?? idk why. I hope you'll enjoy the Lara Jean books! They're really light and adorable.

  4. I'll go through moods where all I want to read is contemporary, but most of the time I only read one because it's been sitting on my shelf for so long. I have a weakness for beautiful covers though, and I swear 99% of contemporaries have GORGEOUS covers! Urghhh. I much rather prefer other genres though because there's more action and I love fantasy books set in different worlds. I absolutely loved Wonder though, and I enjoyed Jenny Han's books and Fangirl. I'm still anxiously waiting to get my hands on I'll Give You the Sun. I didn't even like TFIOS at all, and have no clue what happened to my copy. Whoops.

    1. YES OMG. I love how contemporaries have all these kinds of different covers, and I rarely see contemporaries with ugly covers, and I'm also a sucker for beautiful covers! Glad to see we have similar sense in books tho haha! x

  5. I don't generally read contemporary, either! I am more of a fantasy/sci-fi kind of girl. Really, anything with magic and/or ray guns and I'm good. But sometimes I get caught in that contemporary mood, ya know? I tend to lean toward the sadder side of things, especially in contemporary. Have you read We Were Liars? It's my favorite contemporary! I really like this series, Tasya! It's a cool idea.

  7. I also find that contemporary books are the least popular on my shelves (I have way more fantasy!) However, when I do find a contemporary book I love I usually REALLY love it. Have you read any other books by Meg Cabot besides The Princess Diaries? She's one of my favorite contemporary writers!

  8. Contemporary books are some of my most read genres, but not my favourite. This is mainly because I search for any and all LGBTQIAP+ books that I can read, and sadly most of them fall into the contemporary genre. We need more sci-fi and fantasy LGBTQIAP+ books *sigh*

    Have you read I'll Give You the Sun? It is so incredibly gorgeous. I adored practically everything about it. If you bought it in Australia, that probably means you got the edition with the gorgeous art inside! It's so much more special with that added beauty.

    I would be scared to do a feature like this because I own hundreds of books. I am a book hoarder *hides*

    1. Ahh it's realy sad how fantasy doesn't really have LGBTQIAP+ aspects there, we definitely need more books! I have, and while I don't love it, I did fell for it. And yes, my edition has the gorgeous art in it :D It makes me feel more connected to Noah haha! I'm also scared to know how many books I own, but I think it would help me in the end to control my book buying tendencies :D
