I've seen a lot of people raving about this book, and it took me a while, but I finally read it! I'm glad I did, because it doesn't dissapoint me!
I really love to explore other parts of the Grisha universe other than Ravka. We see a lot more of Ketterdam, and actually visits Fjerda. I love how Leigh Bardugo incorporated different cultures in her world. While Ravka has Russian-based cultures, I think Ketterdam has more like Dutch culture, with all the names (Van Eck, Heleen), the canals, and rivers. And even though Fjerda is depicted as extremely cold and snow all over and the Ice Palace, I feel like it has Germany-based cultures with the name like Jarl Brum, and colorful buildings. Now I really want to know more and visit Shu Han. I don't really know if it's more Chinese and Korean, but it would be awesome to read more about it!
I also realy love the plot. It was definitely action packed, with all the gunfights and sneaking and competitions and explosions all over the book, and fast paced. It goes right into the action. I do have some complaints about
this book though. I don't see the point of different povs other than to
tell their backstory, because they all sound the same to me, and those
povs still use 3rd person pronouns instead of 1st person pronouns. Also,
it gets kind of repetitive near the end because everyone tells what
happened to them at "eleven and quarter chimes". And, how do you create a
quarter or a half bells???
Kaz is the leader of the group and the mastermind. I love how sly he is, always prepared, always managed to make a plan, always managed to surprise everyone. He reminds me of Nikolai, but definitely darker. His past is absolutely terrible, I would never guessed that *spoiler he has to stay afloat using his dead brother's body *shudders* *spoiler ends. No wonder he's really determined for revenge and could be ruthless sometimes. But in my opinion, *spoiler it wasn't entirely Pekka Rollins' fault. If only Jordie could control his greed and think again, he would know when to stop. *spoiler ends.
Inej is also known The Wraith. She's the best spy in town, she could scale every building, and walk without any sound. She's also deadly with her weapons. I love how she still believes in her Gods and Goddeses, after everything that happened to her, and still feel strong connection with her family. I also love how she finally finds her goal. But unfortunately her backstory is kind of meh for me... I mean it wasn't as awful as the others so...
Nina is a heartrender. After Ravka civil war, she accidentally caught by Druskelle, and because one and other things form an uneasy friendship with Matthias, but eventually betrays him. Matthias was put in a prison, and they have fragile and uneasy relationship ever since. I love how Nina seems harmless, she's bubbly and she could seduce you, but one flick of her hand and you're out. But sometimes she's too reckless and impulsive, which put other people at risk. Matthias is okay I guess. I'll see where his character development goes in the next book.
Jesper is the sharp shooter. He's like the class clown, he always managed to make me laugh with his attitude. His backstory also kind of meh, because it was pretty common.
Now here's a surprise, even for me. My favorite is Wylan! He's a cute marshmallow, but give him explosives and you got to be careful! Where's his pov though??? I keep waiting for that, to see inside his head. His backstory surprised me though. I didn't see that coming.
I love how frustrating Kaz and Inej relationship is. It burns soooooooo slow. Both of them aren't really good with their feelings. JUST KISS GUYS. I love Nina and Matthias, because even though they relationship is complicated at the beginning, they can't denied their feelings and they eventually came together! YAY. BUT GUYS. Jesper and Wyland is my favorite. I don't know if they're gay, or just bromance, I don't care. THEY'RE SO CUTE!
I love Inej and Nina friendship, they got each other's back and give each other love advice. But I hate how distinct Kaz and his crews. He shows nothing for them. As for Matthias, maybe because he is new and needs some time to adapt. The crew still have a lot of things to improve in their relationships, and I hope to see more interactions between them.
Overall, I LOVE this book! It's incredibly gripping and it never bores me. Highly recommended, definitely one of my best reads in 2015!
