Summary:

Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly.
Destined for greatness.

In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.

Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?

Review:

“You could rattle the stars," she whispered. "You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.”

Before I start, let me tell you that I'm really glad I read this book. The summary is intriguing, there's so much hype surrounding this series, the Queen of Shadows will be released this year, and ACOTAR was also released this year. There's no other perfect time to read this book/series other than this year. I went into this book with really high expectations, expecting to have a hangover or raving about this book. Well, it was kind of... dissapointing. But it was still really really good, and I can understand all the hype surrounding this book.

Celaena Sadorthien is an interesting character. She's a mix of everything. She's a deadly assassin, who cares about her looks, loves beautiful dresses, candy, puppy, and books, and she'll do anything to defeat the tyrant king. She's snarky, brave, and smart. And of course, she kicks a lot of ass.
“My name is Celaena Sardothien. But it makes no difference if my name's Celaena or Lillian or Bitch, because I'd still beat you, no matter what you call me.”

The world building is really solid. The author did a really good job in describing it, making it really vivid in my imagination. And this book comes with a map too, which is really helpful. The writing style is amazing. The author doesn't use fancy words and beautiful phrases, but the writing still flows smoothly and we could connect with the characters. I love how this book gave little insight on the training and the test, only told us when it's necessary, so we could also see other important element in the stories like the political intrigue, murder, and magic. And the author manage to not turning this book into a love triangle mess! *claps* This is an example that YA novel doesn't have to has any romance/love triangle at all!

Overall, I think the lack of action was kind of dissapointing for me. I really liked this book, but it didn't wow me as I was expected. I feel like there's something missing in this series, and too many loopholes. But since this is a series, I understand that there has to be some room/holes in this book for the next book to improve. Can't wait to read the Crown of Midnight!

  1. Agreed! There were a few loopholes and things that were left unanswered in the first book. I haven't read the others yet, but I'm hoping that they all will be answered/resolved! Great review :)
