Colourful, raw, brave, rich and fantastical - this mermaid tale is not for the faint-hearted.

Looking after a naked girl he found washed up under Hastings pier isn't exactly how Rory had imagined spending his sixteenth birthday. But more surprising than finding her in the first place is discovering where she has come from.

Lorali is running not just from the sea, not just from her position as princess, but her entire destiny. Lorali has rejected life as a mermaid, and become human.

But along with Lorali's arrival, and the freak weather suddenly battering the coast, more strange visitors begin appearing in Rory's bemused Sussex town. With beautifully coiffed hair, sharp-collared shirts and a pirate ship shaped like a Tudor house, the Abelgare boys are a mystery all of their own. What are they really up to? Can Rory protect Lorali? And who from? And where does she really belong, anyway?

This is surprisingly a really quick read! And by quick, I mean if it wasn't for school and life standing in the way, I could finish this book in a day. I went into this book without any expectations, and I'm happy that this book could surprise me.

The story is told from 3 povs, Lorali, Rory, and The Sea. I love how The Sea tells us what happened underwater, on the ship, and in London. I love how Rory and Lorali told us what happened in Hastings. Together, their story entertwined and created the beautiful big story. I also love how whimsical the story felt.

The characters. Lorali naiveness is adorable. She's new to the human world, and she doesn't even try to hide it. She wants to taste and try everything, she wants to experience everything to the fullest. Rory is all protective with Lorali, sometimes he seems younger than 16, other times he's older. There's no inbetween with them. The Ableglares are my favorite. I love how they're different from other pirates and actually nice and really got each others back. I knew Elvis were trouble since the first chapter, but Flynn is such a nice person. And Iris and Carmine!! They're so adorable and heartbreaking omg.

But there are also parts I don't really like. The insta love is one of my problem. I get why Lorali would fall for Rory, but Rory is just too protective it's kind of scary at some points. And he just dissapear for days without checking in with her mom, and when he needs her he just called her and she seems okay with that, even though she has depression. And Elvis reasons is just so weird and unbelieveable.

BUT THAT ENDING THOUGH. That was so heartbreaking and so unexpected. I mean, the story itself was predictable. After the few first chapters, I could predict how the events would unfold. But the ending??? Never thought of that. spoiler I never thought Lorali and Rory would switch place! It's just so sad that after all they couldn't be together and it's like Iris and Carmine all over again! And Otto. Poor Otto. I wish something better for the Ableglares! spoiler ends. What happened next?? What happened with the Ableglares? Will they ever speak with Rory and Lorali again??

Overall, it was a really quick and enjoyable story. I love how Laura Dockrill put a twist on a classic mermaid tale with her own mermaid tale.

  1. YOU ARE THE FIRST person to talk about this whole idea of instalove in books! it's so unrealistic sometimes and usually makes me end up disliking the book more for it. i had a book i read recently where the main character fell for the male heart throb from the first chapter and i was like WHAT. you only know his name!
Great review! it's funny because i've been looking for a book with mermaids in it for a while now, so this one might be going on my GOodreads To read board! i picked up a book that i thought was about mermaids and was really excited to start it, then i realized it had nothing to do with them except for the fact that the book was set near the ocean.
Happy reading and thanks for the great review!
