The Unpopular Opinion Book Tag
8:00 AM
We all have been a black sheep, whether in reading or in real life. And that's okay! It gives the another side to the story and I think it's really fun reading an opinion that's totally different from yours. So I saw this tag from Grace Stella's youtube video months ago, and I think it would be fun to do it. Before we start, please understand that this is my opinion, and I don't mean to offend anyone or any group. We all have different opinions you guys, be nice :) Let's get started!
A popular book or series that you didn’t like
Let's see... I have a lot but I think I'll choose Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard for this one. It's just so unoriginal, it feels like Red Rising mixed with The Selection and X-Men and THG. It also feels really repetitve to me and the romance is just horrible. I feel nothing for any of the characters, and can't feel the chemistry between Mare/Cal or Mare/Maven! I honestly don't care with what happens next, which is why I won't continue with the series.
A popular book or series that you love but other hate
The Vampire Diaries by L.J Smith. I read this series back when I was 10, and haven't do any re-read ever since. I don't know if my taste has change or not, but I remember really loved it when I read it. I have the full series, even to the new ones. I'm surprised that many people doesn't like it and think that the TV show is better. Well, in some aspect it is better, but I still like the book more!
A love triangle where a person ended up with the person you didn’t want them to be with
Alina/Mal/Darkling/Nikolai from the Grisha trilogy. I knew from the beginning that my ship will sink, but I can't just abandon it.
A popular book genre that you hardly ever reach for
Definitely non-fiction. I'm trying to fix that this year though! I mean, while it can be inspiring, it also can be depressing. It's also kind of boring you know, if you read for something/someone's biography that you have 0 interest in.
A popular character that you did not like
Mal from the Grisha trilogy. I know some people liked him, but I just don't... I hate the way he realizes that he likes Alina only after she was taken away from him. He also kinda pushed Alina to give up her Grisha power and have a normal life with him. I dislike him the most on book 2.
A popular author you can’t get into
John Green. It's not that I hate him, it's just... I think he's okay. I've read TFIOS and Let It Snow, and I think they're okay. I also have read Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and while I really enjoyed it, I find myself liking David Levithan's Will Grayson way better than John Green's. I think my problem is all his character has the same qualities and attitude, and I just don't like them *shrugs*
A popular book trope you’re tired of seeing
MC that's "normal" but actually a special snowflake that thrust into the action and be the savior. Why can't we have someone that's properly trained and actually prepared to be the savior??? It will save so much time and actually refreshing to see someone that instead of being too scared to stand up, is too confident, make mistakes because of it and have to learn to be more humble.
A popular book series you have no intention of reading
Lux Series by JLA. It's not exactly that I have no intention, I mean I have it on my tbr shelf in Goodreads, but I never felt any urgent need or mood to read it.
TV/movie adaptation that you like more than the book
Umm I don't know about this one... Maybe The Hunger Games? I really enjoyed the way the action and rebellion brought into the big screen. The atmosphere is really fitting, and the CGI is awesome.
I tag everyone that wants to do it! :)

You didn't enjoy Red Queen?! *gasps* Nah, it's fine, I can see why. The theme is quite overused, and the characters are basically a different version of other ones. Same with me for John Green - I adored TFIOS, but that was it. I didn't really enjoy his other books, unfortunately. This is a cool tag!

Yep, I think I'm pretty done with Dystopian in general after reading Red Queen because I realised how similar they are all... I'm glad to see someone who doesn't click with John's book too! It's scary because his fandom is pretty huge.
DeleteI'm right with you with the Grisha series! I enjoyed it, but I definitely shipped Alina and the Darkling a lot more than I did with her and Mal. I mean, Mal was fine, but there was nothing about his character that completely blew me away! I'm definitely not a non-fiction person either. I mean, not that they're not inspiring, but I find them a bit bland, just because it's nothing I haven't heard of before, you know?
ReplyDeleteAnother Darklina shippers *flails* I get why people hates the Darkling, but I also feel like he's the one for Alina! I get you, non-fiction is like contemporary, but sometimes they're just more sadder because they are based on true story and true people instead of characters. I think that's why I don't really like it...
DeleteOh I love this tag so much - always so fun to read! I totally agree with John Green by the way - sometimes it feels like I'm reading the same book, but with different names for the characters o_O
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yeah, all his characters seem to have same personalities!
DeleteI adore unpopular opinions and I couldn't agree with you more on Mal. He only seemed interested in her after she was marked as special and even then he resented her for being special. I had really really hoped she would end up with Nikolai. I could read an entire book about him. He had in his pinky finger more character and charisma than Mal.
ReplyDeleteLiselle @ Lunch-Time Librarian
YES. Like her power is the part of her, why do you hate it so much?? Without her power, he would've been dead and won't realize his "feelings" for Alina. I love Nikolai, but Alina doesn't strike me as someone who would want to rule?? I ship Nikolai with Zoya tbh xD
DeleteI agree with the red queen, I read the first book, but the second book I couldn't even finish. *sigh* and the covers were so pretty...
ReplyDeleteI don't even bother to continue with the 2nd book xD But yeah, the covers are gorgeous!
DeleteI'm so happy you answered this tag! It's definitely one of my favorite ones to read!
ReplyDeleteI have to say: John Green is also an author I can't relate to. However, when I read Will Grayson Will Grayson, I ended up enjoying his Will Grayson more than David Levithan's, even though Levithan is one of my favorite authors ever. I know. Weird.
And I agree with you 100% when it comes to The Hunger Games. I enjoyed the movies much more than the books, especially Catching Fire. I found the book to be very confusing, so I appreciated how everything seemed clearer on the big screen.
Great post, Tasya!
That's weird. But I think we have our own favorite Will Grayson :D Yeah, things were a bit unclear in the book, especially in Mockingjay since Katniss gets a bit mental. Thank you!
DeleteThis is such a cute post! :) I don't really read nonfiction as well, but there's this one nonfictional book that I've been eyeing for recently (which surprises even me). I want to read Tuesdays With Morrie under my mom's recommendation, haha. And I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Red Queen. I do have to agree, though, that it was quite unoriginal, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. I do understand that it wasn't your cup of tea! Great post Tasya :)
ReplyDeleteJillian @ Jillian's Books
I've also been eyeing few non fictions like autobiography by few famous people :D I'm glad you enjoyed Red Queen! People do have different reading tastes :)
DeleteI agree about the Red Queen. I just don't understand why there's so much hype around it. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels that way! And my ship sunk in Shadow & Bone too. :( Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! <3
ReplyDeleteMe neither :( But I guess there are a lot of people that doesn't mind the same plot and characters... Leigh Bardugo definitely sunk a lot of ship in that book :(
DeleteSame about Red Queen! It got so much hype and I honestly thought it combined too many known tropes out there. I'm still continuing the series though because WHY NOT (lol). And I like to be in the know.
ReplyDeleteI actually really disliked Mal in book 2 of Shadow and Bone, but liked him out of all the love interests. (Plus, Nikolai's mine so... :P ) In all honestly I think Alina was strong enough without no man but romance y'know.
I hope you decide to pick up the Lux series! It's definitely not my favorite, nor did it have great writing (so cliche omg) but it was still enjoyable :D
- Aila @ One Way Or An Author
It's like all the famous books mashed into one series tbh. I just read your reviews to find out what happened in the next books xD I kinda wish she became the next Grisha leader alone at some point, like Reyna to the camp Jupiter, because the romance got too confusing xD But it also didn't happened... I definitely will, but I don't think it will be in the near future!
DeleteI agree with you so much on these! I read The Vampire Diaries books in middle school after I started watching the show, and while I think they're both good, I will almost always prefer the books. But if I'm being honest, I don't think I can really compare them. They're so different that they might as well be completely unrelated. And I've really been meaning to read more nonfiction, but never seem to get around to it. Also I've never been able to get into John Green. I've read a few of his books and while I like them, they aren't mind blowing or anything. Loved this tag a lot!
ReplyDeleteYes the tv show is definitely different with the book. But character-wise, I think the main trio is potrayed in the same way. Other than that it doesn't feel like an adaptation, it's like same concept, but different thing :D
DeleteUmmmm.... we agree on almost all of these. I was so upset at who Alina ended up with and I am #teamdarkling for life! I love him so, so much and I will forever be bitter over that ending. It's still my favorite series though. I'm also starting agree with Red Queen. I loved the first book even though I didn't read it until a year after it was released, but I cannot get into the second and I'm not sure what it is but I'm bored. Oh well... Great post!
ReplyDeleteTracy @ Cornerfolds
#teamdarkling #darklina4lyfe I think the ending was bittersweet, but I'd LOVE it more if she ends with him! It's the only thing I complained about the final book. So many people have complained about Glass Sword, I'm glad I didn't even bother! Maybe because Mare seems even more annoying? xD
DeleteThis is such a fun tag! I am actually starting to think that I am one of the few people who actually *did* like Mal bwhaha. I haven't read Red Queen, but it seems like people either love it or loathe it, which is probably why I am so scared to start it! I am not a huge fan of non-fiction either! And I feel you on the special snowflake trope- enough! Great post!
ReplyDeleteThere are people who like Mal, but most of the readers like the Darkling, and I don't know why xD Even as a darkling girl, I could see how creepy the romance actually is #sorrynotsorry. YES. Can we have someone that's not special?? That has been properly trained as savior??
DeleteOHHH WE ARE TWINNING FOR SO MANY OF THESE AHHH!! I'm so glad to finally find someone who doesn't like Mal. xD He was such a whiny moody thing omg. NIKOLAI FOREVER. <3 (Although tbh Alina didn't even deserve Nikolai because he was so so fabulous. But I'm still angry at how he basically got tossed aside randomly in bk 3 and Alina didn't even care. LIKE WHAT IS THIS. NIKOLAI MY BABY CHILD.) And I totally disliked Red Queen too! I think it copied far too heavily. 0_0
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!
YEEEES. I think a lot of people dislike Mal?? And yes, I also hate the way Nikolai just get out of the way randomly. Like what?? I thought he would have more role than that???
DeleteI agree with you on so many of these! I didn't enjoy Red Queen either - I thought it was so dull, and completely unoriginal. I found all the characters to be super bland and I didn't like the romance either! I'm not a huge fan of John Green either, and while I've read the first one, I really don't want to continue with the Lux series because I really hated Obsidian.
ReplyDeleteDenise | The Bibliolater
Yes! That's exactly what I thought about Red Queen. Wow there are so many people that actually dislike John Green xD Now that makes me more confused to start Lux series xD
DeleteOoh, hi, I love the design of your blog *heart eyes.* I didn't like Red Queen either! Well, I gave it three stars but I don't really see myself picking up the sequel anytime soon. WOAH, I don't like John Green's work either! I only read TFIOS, got spoiled for a lot, and idk... it just feels like he's doing the same story over and over again..?? Tortured girl and boy meet each other, happiness in between, but not enough to save the other..
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Princessica of Books!
Thank you! I also gave it 3 star but it's a very gracious 3 stars and I'm thinking of lowering it down honestly... Yeah, his books are pretty formulaic tbh.
DeleteI think everyone was a little disappointed when Alina actually chose Mal. XD I always hoped the Darkling would get his happy ending. I have to say, I am a fan of nonfiction, but I totally used to live in your boat so I don't blame you at all. I've never really been able to get into John Green's books, either. I don't know why. He just doesn't tempt me.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, thanks for visiting me at Sometimes I'm a Story!
I guess so xD Mal was... a really safe choice?? I'm trying to read more non fiction this year, so I'm really open to recommendation! :D
DeleteOh. My. GOODNESS! I completely agree with you about John Green. His writing, to me, is just very chick-flicky and cheesy, and a lot of his works seem to follow a similar plot. I couldn't stand TFIOS. The Vampire Diaries books are really boring, but I loved the TV show until season 7. Lux is okay, they're nothing amazingly special (as I've come to realise over time.) 12 year old me really loved it but It's really not very unique. Great Post!
